Hail Damaged Car? Here's What It's Actually Worth

Published 2026-02-24 • Damaged Cars

Melbourne and Victoria get hammered by hail storms every few years. When a big event hits — like the storms that tore through the southeast suburbs — thousands of cars get dinged up at once. If yours is one of them, here's a realistic look at what you're dealing with.

How Much Does Hail Damage Actually Reduce a Car's Value?

A lot. Even minor hail damage — small dents across the bonnet and roof — can reduce a car's private sale value by $2,000–$5,000 on a mid-range car. Severe damage (deep dents, cracked glass, stripped paint) can push it to a total loss.

Insurers use a threshold — typically around 70–75% of the car's market value — to decide whether to write it off or repair it. If repairs would cost 70%+ of what the car is worth, most insurers will declare it a total loss.

Your Options After a Hail Event

Option 1: Claim on Insurance (If You Have Comprehensive)

This is the obvious first step if you have comprehensive cover. Lodge a claim, get the car assessed, and see what they offer.

A few things to know:

Total loss payout: If the car is written off, the insurer pays you the agreed value (what your policy specifies) or market value (what the car was worth just before the damage). Check which your policy is — agreed value tends to be more favourable for older cars.

Repair payout: If they choose to repair, make sure the repair is actually done properly. Hail dent removal (PDR) is the standard method for minor-to-moderate hail damage. For severe damage, panel replacement may be needed.

The problem: Repaired hail cars never fully recover their resale value. Even with a perfect repair, buyers know. The car will show on PPSR if it was written off, and a vehicle history check may flag the insurance event. This affects what you'll get when you eventually sell.

Option 2: Accept the Write-Off Payment and Walk Away

If the insurer totals the car, they'll usually give you two choices: 1. Take the cash settlement and let them take the car 2. Retain the salvage (keep the car) and get a reduced payout

If you retain the salvage, you keep the car but at a reduced payout — and the car gets listed on the Written-Off Vehicles Register (WOVR). A repairable write-off can be re-registered after passing a VIV inspection and a roadworthy, but it's a process.

For most people, taking the full settlement and letting the insurer take the car is the cleaner path.

Option 3: Sell the Hail Damaged Car Without Claiming

If you don't have comprehensive insurance (or your excess makes a claim uneconomical), you're selling the car as-is. Hail damaged cars are a known commodity in the car market — there are buyers for them, including panel beaters who buy them to repair and resell, and wreckers who buy for parts.

What to expect from different buyers: - Private buyers: Significantly discounted. Most will lowball aggressively, knowing they'll need repair costs on top. - Cash-for-cars buyers: Realistic offers based on actual market value for a hail damaged vehicle. No roadworthy needed, no drama. - Auction: Hail cars sell regularly at salvage auctions. You'll get a market rate but less than a direct sale.

Option 4: Get PDR Done Privately and Sell Repaired

Paintless Dent Removal (PDR) for moderate hail damage on a mid-size car typically costs $1,000–$4,000 depending on the extent of damage. If the car is worth $15,000 undamaged and $9,000 hail damaged, spending $2,500 on PDR to get $14,000 makes sense.

For lower-value cars, the maths usually doesn't work. Spending $2,000 on repairs to get an extra $1,500 is not a good outcome.

Does Hail Damage Show Up on a PPSR Check?

If the car was declared a total loss (written off) by an insurer, yes — it will be listed on the WOVR and this appears in PPSR searches. Any buyer doing their homework will see it.

If the car was repaired under an insurance claim but not written off, there's no WOVR entry — but savvy buyers may ask for a full vehicle history report.
